From “Animal Liberation” to “Nuanced”- What Does That Mean Coming from an Animal Rights Ideological Activist?

Manny Rutinel says he has changed. The appointed Colorado state representative and congressional candidate said he has not been vegan for several years and described his current understanding of animal agriculture as views that are more “nuanced”.

People can and do change their views. Public officials should not necessarily be defined forever by every statement they made when they were young. However, a fair evaluation of Rutinel’s record must consider more than his early Reddit posts. It must also examine the professional and political activities that continued through Yale Law School, Earthjustice, Climate Refarm, and his 2024 appearance before the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) Student Convention. He has been a hard-and-fast member of the radical animal rights ideological agenda for almost two decades. The timeline raises a legitimate question: Is he lying to us all?

What Does “Nuanced” Mean?

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, “Nuance means a very small, subtle difference in meaning, feeling, color, or sound.” It gives another example of: “The difference between calling someone 'determined' (positive) versus 'stubborn' (negative).” Dictionary.com provides this example: “She carefully nuanced her words to put a positive spin on the situation.”

We asked Google, “What does it mean when a radical activist now says their views are nuanced?” Here are some of the answers we found particularly interesting:

• Strategic Moderation: They may be softening their public language to appeal to a broader, mainstream audience.
• Accountability Avoidance: Labeling past extreme statements as "nuanced" can be a tactical way to deflect criticism or consequences without fully apologizing.
• Contextual Application: They still hold radical goals but now recognize that implementation requires complex, step-by-step compromises.
• The Political Survival Strategy: A candidate cannot win a district while actively alienating its primary economic engine. In a highly competitive swing district, claiming a view is "nuanced" allows a candidate to court the necessary moderate and rural voters without forcing them to completely apologize to or alienate their original progressive base.
• Policy Specifics: A truly "nuanced" position will feature detailed protections for the local industry. If the candidate’s official platform remains vague on agricultural protections while emphasizing broader progressive goals, the pivot may be purely aesthetic.
• Coalition and Funding: Examining where a candidate's campaign funding originates, whether from local agricultural interests or out-of-state environmental and animal-rights political action committees, frequently reveals where their true accountability lies.

The Early Animal Liberation Statements

The Colorado Sun reported that Rutinel used Reddit to express support for animal liberation and a future in which agricultural animals would no longer be slaughtered for food. Among other statements, he asked why everyone could not adopt a vegan lifestyle and wrote that remaining agricultural animals could be placed in sanctuaries after animal liberation legislation passed. Rutinel indicated that he became vegan and against animal agriculture (we use the term radicalized) when he was 14 years old. While Rutinel was an undergrad, he joined a radical animal rights club and protested for PETA.

The Yale Record

Several years after the Reddit statements, Rutinel participated in Yale’s Climate, Animal, Food and Environmental Law & Policy Lab. The resulting project proposed paying livestock producers to transition from animal agriculture to plant agriculture. Rutinel said carbon-offset financing could make it more profitable for farmers to operate an entirely different business. He described animal agriculture as a “horrific, exploitive industry” and said it caused harm involving animals, laborers, farmers, communities, consumers and public health. He argued that existing regulations failed to account adequately for those costs. This was not a teenage social media post. It was a detailed legal and economic proposal developed at Yale and intended for possible adoption by private carbon registries and government compliance programs. It was a report that relied heavily on the debunked FAO report, Livestock’s Long Shadow”. While he was at Yale, he interned for the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF). Along the way, he also worked for the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), which recently re-branded as Humane World for Animals, Mercy for Animals, and the Humane League.

Climate Refarm and Earthjustice

Rutinel developed the transition proposal he authored at Yale into a startup first called TransfarmAg and later known as Climate Refarm. Yale described the company as leveraging carbon-offset credits to help farmers transition away from livestock production. After law school, Rutinel joined Earthjustice and participated in litigation involving slaughterhouse and animal-rendering wastewater regulations.

Earthjustice reported that the case resulted in an EPA commitment to finalize updated pollution controls.

At the 2024 ALDF convention, Rutinel characterized his work by saying his whole job had been to take on large meat corporations and “sue them for all their worth.”

The 2024 Trojan Horse Statements While a Member of the Colorado State House

Rutinel’s ALDF appearance is especially important because it occurred while he was serving in the Colorado House of Representatives. He encouraged animal advocates to work inside government agencies, corporations, and elected offices. He said advocates could expand the movement by bringing its values into institutions that did not formally identify as animal organizations. We call this his Trojan Horse strategy to implement his radical ideological agenda.

He used the EPA as an example and argued that an advocate inside the agency could contribute knowledge about what he called the environmental destruction imposed by animal agriculture.

He also praised institutional action, discussed Proposition 12 as an example of the movement’s power and said elected officials with the audience’s values could propose animal-related legislation and stop legislation believed to harm animals. These were not positions expressed at age 14 or 22. They were statements by a sitting Colorado State legislator in October 2024.

The Campaign-Era Explanation

As Rutinel campaigns in Colorado’s 8th Congressional District, he has emphasized his interactions with farmers and ranchers. He is now wearing a cowboy hat. He told The Colorado Sun that he now eats meat and has not been vegan for several years. He said conversations with agricultural producers have helped shape a more complex understanding of ranching and livestock production. Based on his almost two decades of activities and the Trojan Horse strategy he imparted to law students, we question the integrity of those statements.

The district gives Rutinel a strong political reason to cosplay in a cowboy hat and make claims that his views are now “nuanced”. The 8th Congressional District in Colorado contains thousands of farms and ranches, significant dairy and livestock production, and the JBS beef-processing facility in Greeley. The Colorado Sun reported that the district produced approximately $1.2 billion in animal products in 2022.

The Missing Explanation

Candidates do sometimes change their views on specific issues. However, when this so-called change concerns almost two decades of heavy activism and a long professional record rather than a single youthful statement, voters are entitled to question a candidate's statements. When a candidate on video encourages Trojan Horse tactics - gaining employment or political seats, or seats in government agencies with the purpose of promoting an ideological agenda, that speaks volumes about his personal integrity.

At this time, Rutinel has not disavowed his statements or activities; instead, he calls them views and says they are now “nuanced.” This sure looks like an attempt to gaslight intelligent voters into believing that his activities, less than 18 months ago, are representative of youthful views.
